Harald Katzmair

Electoral landscape in Austria

In the ORF report of April 7, 2023, Harald Katzmair talks about two major worries that are currently "heckling" us, so to speak.

On the one hand, there is the worry about the end of the world (threats such as climate change, nuclear war or culture war), on the other hand, there is the worry about the end of the month and whether all bills can still be paid.

Between the end of the month and the end of the world we are squeezed and through this squeeze, through this oppression we become more and more emotional, less and less able to take in complex and rational facts. There are two - superficially - simple ways out of this distress and politics gives us these promises: on the one hand, protection from the threatening world through demarcation (symbols such as fortresses, walls), on the other hand, through the promise of a way out (an escape from the distress, for example, through the promise of "climate happiness").
